The night rating is a 5 hour training course designed to allow pilots to fly VFR at night and is an addition to a UK Private Pilot Licence.
The night rating allows the holder to operate an aircraft at night under visual flight rules (VFR).
Holders of the rating who also have an instrument rating can also operate under instrument flight rules (IFR).
The night rating is a lifetime rating and does not expire. The only currency requirements associated with the rating are that the holder must have completed 1 take-off and landing at night in the preceding 90 days, on top of normal recency requirements.

To qualify for a night rating you must hold a valid UK Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL).
If you are training towards a PPL, the application for a night rating can be completed at the same time as application for the licence on completion of the course.
